Monthly Global Surface Temperature Anomaly

An animation showing the rise in global surface temperatures, 1940 - Present.

In this animation, each yellow dot represents the global surface temperature anomaly for one month, using Copernicus data, compared to the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline. The time spanned in this animation is from January, 1940 to the latest data for April, 2026.

After each month is posted, the quadratic trendline (in red) is updated. For quite a while this trendline is roughly flat, but in the 1980’s it starts to take its shape, and by the 2000’s the acceleration of global surface temperatures is obvious.

In particular, in the final few frames the red trendline passes through 1.5°C, which is another way of saying that the Paris Agreement to hold temperatures below 1.5°C is history.
